The Smart Marine Protected Area (MPA) ‘Capo Carbonara’ project entails the installation of multiple LPWAN gateways, a cutting-edge video surveillance system and a fleet of drones.
The project entails the deployment of a system comprising sensors and cameras with the capacity to detect a range of physical quantities and images, which will be relayed to a control centre monitored by MPA personnel. This will facilitate the verification of emergency reports submitted by citizens via SOS points, enable the prompt detection of pollutants and fire sources, and allow for the monitoring of human activities that are incompatible with the MPA, including poaching, waste disposal and potential arson. The project will utilise renewable energy sources, including photovoltaic panels, to power the various devices. Additionally, low-energy sensors will be employed to minimise energy consumption.
The deployment of long-range wireless connectivity (approximately 10 km), a video surveillance system and a fleet of drones will facilitate the intelligent management of the entire MPA ecosystem. This will encompass access to beaches with closed/paid numbers, the monitoring of the position of recreational units within the MPA and the tracking of those engaged in water sports activities. This is a pioneering project not only in Sardinia but also nationwide, combining cutting-edge technology with an innovative communication platform. IT Euromedia will be working in collaboration with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Cagliari on the experimentation of environmental monitoring using autonomously guided drones.
